We at New York Dick feel that there is no reason to hide a healthy and complex interest in the "phallographic arts", absurd yet insightful penis drawings have a rich history our culture and they should be celebrated. So what better way is there to show that your copy of NYD doesn't represent a meaningless interest that only appeals to you than to present along side it two other amazing books that help put the phallographic fringe in context.

The American outsider artist Henry Darger never fails to intrigue, amaze and shock. Retro sci-fi child soldiers, war, murder, executions, natural disasters, strange and seemingly banal collage/drawings, obsessive and near psychopathic imagery and writing, it's all here, all unbelievably strange. And the crazy footnote, most of the characters featured in his colossal work of graphic fiction "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion" are young girls with pre-pubesent sized penises, amazing. There are many books on Darger but among the best isHenry Darger by Klaus Biesenbach, published by Prestel USA, a very rich area to explore, spooky but high-brow.

And on a lighter and more low-brow note isSuperbad: The Drawings. Superbad (the movie) was a big success for the team of Apatow/Goldberg/Rogan/et al, steady work for sure but by far the most groundbreaking aspect of the movie was the slight detour in the story that informed us all about the common and perfectly natural desire to draw penises on everything in sight. Seth explains to Evan (the characters, not the writers, well sort of) his youthful penis drawing compulsion, "when I was a little kid I kind of had this problem, and it's not even that big of a deal, something like eight percent of kids do it, but whatever". Truthfully, in one way or another it's probably a lot more than eight percent, and we at NYD are really pleased about that. A book of the penis drawings (as concocted by David Goldberg, brother of the writer/producer/character) was published to coincide with the release of the movie and it is awesome. It's a small book, funny, strange, not too weird, just weird enough.

Don't be bashful about displaying New York Dick, and keep that penis drawing bookshelf heavy with weird, funny and amazing wee wees.
