“Giant Galactic Space Dick” is what the activist/artists who painted this massive and risky penis defacement dubbed their creation. They may as well of called it “Giant f-you to corrupt and oppressive security apparatchiks” since it was created specifically to rise into dick-proud view facing the headquarters of the Federal Security Service, FSB (the somewhat less oppressive descendent of the infamous KGB.)

The massive member was the work of the radical art collective Voina (“War” in Russian) who drip/pour painted the pecker on the draw bridge to highlight their opposition to security measures planned by the FSB for the International Economic Forum, to be hosted in St. Petersburg in June. Regarding the drawbridge boner, a Voina spokesmen said “Measuring 220 ft long and 80 feet across, the big penis rises and glistens in the light whenever the bridge is raised to let ships pass beneath, framed against a backdrop of the imposing architecture of the former capital city of the Russian Empire.”

It’s reported that the bridge security guards were more than a bit annoyed, but the local police seemed to think the whole event was fairly amusing, and had the ring of truth about it. Firefighters quickly washed the roadway clean but not before a wee hours crowd had gathered to have their photos taken in front of this delightfully artful and dick-ish political statement. Months later Voina’s artwork/performance, now dubbed “Penis in FSB Captivity,” was nominated for a prestigious state sponsored art award.

NYD wishes good luck to the members of Voina, may the State Center of Contemporary Art and the Culture Ministry follow their nomination with a whole hearted recognition of the creativity and courage required to make a dick-ish statement where and when it’s needed.

An excellent article on Voina and a video of the phallus painting and its erection is at the Animal website, more information on the award nomination is available at The Moscow Times site.
