The statue of William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke proudly invites all who wish to know truth and beauty to approach the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, where now they may view (but not remove from the premises) a copy of New York Dick. One imagines the elegant volume residing in the precious manuscripts room, carefully chained to the bookcase to deter pilferage.
The inscription above the 3rd Earl of Pembroke is particularly apt in light of the august library's latest accusation. Loosely it translates as "May this thing please you, academics of Oxford, for this library has knobs aplenty, for citizens of a libertine republic." Such truth.
The Bodleian Library, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture dating from 1602, is one of the oldest libraries in Europe and serves as the main research library of the University of Oxford. NYD is extremely proud to be included in this truly prestigious collection. So if you're strolling about Oxford and happen to be passing "the Bod" ask the librarian if you may peruse that cheeky volume of naughty doodles from the new York, and enjoy, ye academic phallo graffitophiles.
