We at NYD of course think graffiti is both "neat" and "sneaky" or, in an answer to this amazing film's questioning title — "Graffiti, Fun or Dumb?" — we think it's both FUN and DUMB. This educational film from 1976 not only addresses the classic questions of whether or not graffiti is "valid" and why youth feel a need to rebel but it also has a nice little history recap at the beginning. Everything is wrapped up in awesome 70s fashion package with a theme song so amazing that it is now the official anthem of New York Dumb. Best lyric excerpts -

The dialog and voice over in the film is unbelievably campy and funny but also weirdly accurate, like a relevant argument being made in an absurdly unpersuasive style. Most of the comments make a sort of corny sense and oddly the basic discussion points haven't changed in 36 years.

Let us leave you with one of the quiet truths declared in the film, "For a time there was a certain romance attached to graffiti, it was something one did to declare oneself against authority, like funky old clothes, long hair and hip talk." Thankfully, even after almost four decades there is still a certain romance involved, and thank frickkin' god that we still have the hip talk!

We here at NYD usually concern ourselves with documenting drawings of penises and occasional dickish comments, graffiti of a sort but it's usually anonymous, improvisational, and simple when compared to a classic wild style graffiti piece.

But sometimes there is an interesting intersection of dick/penis-think and dick/penis-action. Many talented writers have lent their hand and style to the actual word "penis", producing mind boggling visuals that when unpacked poke you right in the eye (metaphorically) with a giant, colorful, 3-d shaded "penis."

The esteemed members of The Academy of Phallus Defacement and Affrontery Arts and Sciences congratulate their nominees for this years "Johnsons". The Johnson, trademarked nickname of the golden statuette bestowed by the APDAAS, symbolizes outstanding achievement in the field of schlong based defacement, dick-ish behavior, or general weiner-ness in popular culture.

Historically the Johnson categories reflect recent developments in the field and are not standardized, and this year is no exception. The uniqueness of the categories ensures that the nomination is itself a great honor, but that doesn't mean that there isn't intense maneuvering among the nominees to get their sweaty hands on "their" Johnson.

While it's true that NYD generally celebrates the destruction of a well crafted advertising message by the addition of a feisty hand scrawled penis, we are always willing to embrace an amazing ad when we see one. And when such an ad is in fact all about the trials and tribulations of a feisty hand scrawled penis, well, then we are witnessing a very rare cultural moment.

Such a moment presented itself last year when a commercial created by the advertising agency TBWA, Paris for for France’s AIDES Foundation hit the web. Most tv viewers did not have the pleasure of seeing this naughty AIDS awareness spot, but thankfully the oh so penis friendly internet makes it possible for us all to get an eyeful of this little willy as he goes from erection to dejection and back again.

The spot won three Lions (the Lion is the award bestowed by the Cannes International Advertising Festival for excellence in the field of advertising). Key creatives involved were; Lead Graphist - Vincent Venchiarutti, Lead Animator - Yves Bigerel, Director - Yoann Lemoine, Art Director / Writer - Ingrid Varetz., Music Company - AOC Productions-Paris & NY. Fantastic work, if all ads were like this there would be no need to draw dicks on them, literally.
